How it works ↓

An Android version is in the works. The app is in Japanese.

A person asleep on a train seat, with a yellow bell ringing beside them

How it works

  1. A blank station sign on a platform, with a yellow bell hanging from it

    Pick your station

Search any station in Japan by name. The station list is built into the app, so search works even with a weak signal. Save the stations you use often, and next time it’s just a tap on the bell.

  2. A train heading toward a station, with rings spreading out from a bell above it

    Put your phone away

While the alarm is on, Oriruyo keeps checking the straight-line distance to your station, even with the screen off or while you use other apps.

  3. A smiling passenger raising a fist, holding a phone, as a bell rings

    Get a heads-up

When you come within the distance you set, you get a notification. It reminds you again until you tap “I’m awake”.

Built so you don’t sleep past your stop

Four alert distances

Measured in a straight line from the station: 500 m, 1 km, 2 km (default) or 3 km. Pick a longer one for fast trains.

“Minutes to go” underground

Where your location can’t be found, like underground or in tunnels, a backup timer rings after the number of minutes you enter. Used together with location, whichever comes first wins.

Again, until you’re up

If you don’t respond, it reminds you up to 3 more times, a minute apart. Tapping “I’m awake” stops it.

See what’s going on

The app shows how it is watching, your permissions, when your location was last found, and the estimated distance. If monitoring has stopped, it tells you so.

Sound check

Before your first trip, check that you can hear the alert on the lock screen. If you can’t, the app shows what to check.

Forgot to turn it off?

An alarm ends 3 hours after it starts (you can change this), so it won’t go off somewhere unexpected on another trip.
